Addendum to “The FFX Mode of Operation for Format-Preserving Encryption” A parameter collection for enciphering strings of arbitrary radix and length

چکیده
Background. A scheme for format-preserving encryption (FPE) is supposed to do that which a conventional (possibly tweakable) blockcipher does—encipher messages within some message space X—except that message space, instead of being something like X = {0, 1}128, is more general [1, 3]. For example, the message space might be the set X = {0, 1, . . . , 9}16, in which case each 16-digit plaintext X ∈ X gets enciphered into a 16-digit ciphertext Y ∈ X . In a stringbased FPE scheme—the only type of FPE that we consider here—the message space is of the form X = {0, 1, . . . , radix− 1}n for some message length n and alphabet size radix.

VAES3 scheme for FFX
VAES stands for variable AES. VAES3 is the third generation format-preserving encryption algorithm that was developed in a report [4] simultaneously with the comprehensive paper on FPE [1] and subsequently updated slightly to be in concert with the FFX standard proposal. The standard proposal of FFX includes, in an appendix, example instantiations called A2 and A10. A follow on addendum [3] inc...
متن کاملInvertible Universal Hashing and the TET Encryption Mode
This work describes a mode of operation, TET, that turns a regular block cipher into a length-preserving enciphering scheme for messages of (almost) arbitrary length. When using an n-bit block cipher, the resulting scheme can handle input of any bit-length between n and 2 and associated data of arbitrary length. The mode TET is a concrete instantiation of the generic mode of operation that was ...
متن کاملHCTR: A Variable-Input-Length Enciphering Mode
This paper proposes a blockcipher mode of operation, HCTR, which is a length-preserving encryption mode. HCTR turns an n-bit blockcipher into a tweakable blockcipher that supports arbitrary variable input length which is no less than n bits. The tweak length of HCTR is fixed and can be zero. We prove that HCTR is a strong tweakable pseudorandom permutation ( sprp), when the underlying blockciph...
متن کاملEME*: Extending EME to Handle Arbitrary-Length Messages with Associated Data
This work describes a mode of operation, EME∗, that turns a regular block cipher into alength-preserving enciphering scheme for messages of (almost) arbitrary length. Specifically, theresulting scheme can handle any bit-length, not shorter than the block size of the underlyingcipher, and it also handles associated data of arbitrary bit-length. Such a scheme can either beused...
متن کاملThe FFX Mode of Operation for Format-Preserving Encryption
Schemes for FPE enable one to encrypt Social Security numbers (SSNs), credit card numbers (CCNs), and the like, doing so in such a way that the ciphertext has the same format as the plaintext. In the case of SSNs, for example, this means that the ciphertext, like the plaintext, consists of a nine decimal-digit string. Similarly, encryption of a 16-digit CCN results in a 16-digit ciphertext. FPE...
